Antique Japanese Standing Hina Doll 1914-1925 - Old Male Attendant with COA
This antique Japanese Hina doll was made during the Taisho Period (1914-1925).  His charming facial expression shows the joy he feels at being part of the prestigious Emperor’s Court!
This doll is an old male attendant; he is dressed in a silk embroidered kimono and mounted on a wooden stand.  His facial shape and expression are exquisite, and show the care that went into his creation. His whiskers are very long, and in great condition.  Originally, he most likely held a staff or a carved weapon, but it was not with this doll when Elsie purchased it, and is not included. The doll is in good condition, with some fraying on the fabric of the kimono.  It also can be moved back and forth a small amount, but is firmly fixed on the stand. The doll has wear that is consistent for an item of this age and use.
The Certificate of Authentication included with the doll states,
“ANTIQUE DOLL FROM JAPAN
Part of a Hina Doll Collection
Arise, Inc. of Washington D.C. certifies that this Hina doll is from the Taisho Period (1914-1925).  These miniatures of the Japanese Imperial Court were originally put out on display in celebration of Girls Day (March 3rd).  Arranged on a red draped tier, the dolls formed a court in miniature - from the Emperor and Empress down to the musicians and footmen.
Each doll is a handcrafted sculpture with a body made of a wood and straw compound with multi layered silk clothing.  The face and hands are made of Gofun (a white paste of ground oyster shell).”

Colors are gold, brown and blue, with red accents

Condition - good.  Some fraying on the kimono, staff not included (see photos).
