Description
I believe this is a Japanese marionette puppet, either from the 1800’s or early 1900’s. Neither the puppet or kimono have signature or company markings or tags. The kimono seems to be a bit too big for the puppet. When I bought it they had it displayed by setting the puppet in a cleaned out glass jar with the kimono around the jar. It seemed pretty effective. The puppet itself is about 12.5” high and 9” wide. The head, hands and shoes are all hand carved out of wood and painted. The head has some worn sections and lots of paint chips. The hands show some wear, and have holes in them for puppetry. The shows have worn areas and multiple chips in the fronts. The torse is empty, but the legs have some kind of crunchy material in them.
The silk kimono is about 11” high and 11.5” wide, with sewn sequins and thread, mirrored metal pieces, white and pink fluffy fringe on the front, a silver bullion dragon with beads for eyes, and tassels. It is in very worn condition. Many of the sequins are missing, all of the mirrored pieces are missing from the bottom rows on the front and back and most from the shoulders, the back has no tassels, the inside shows staining, and it generally has a used and aged appearance. There’s also a rip in the kimono on the neck near the tie string.
